Porcelain veneers are super-thin shells of translucent and durable ceramic. Cosmetic dentists, such as William L. Eick DDS at Rocky River Dentistry, apply veneers to healthy teeth that are stained, cracked, chipped or have spacing and alignment issues.
Porcelain veneers, also called dental or ceramic laminates, are a comfortable and durable cosmetic improvement for teeth that are discolored, chipped, misshapen, fractured or have bite and spacing problems. Applied right in the dental chair in just a couple of visits, these micro-thin ceramic shells permanently beautify the shape, size and color of one or more teeth, creating an aesthetically beautiful smile.
What is the porcelain veneer process like?
Cosmetic dentist Dr. William L. Eick evaluates the patient’s teeth and gums, checking for decay, periodontal disease and bite issues. Then, beginning with a healthy smile, he and the patient discuss aesthetic goals–in other words, what the patient wants his or her smile to look like. He may take x-rays and other diagnostic images to arrive at his treatment plan. If porcelainveneersappear to be the right aesthetic solution, Dr. Eick will begin the simple, comfortable process.
Besides determining the shape and coloration for the veneers, he gently removes a thin, ½ mm slice of enamel from the front side of each tooth to be treated. It’s important to note that this preparation makes the porcelain veneers a permanent, irreversible process but does not compromise the integrity of the teeth.
Dr. Eick sends dental impressions and a treatment plan to a dental lab where a highly-skilled ceramist makes a model of the patient’s mouth. He or she then individually crafts each porcelain veneer to create a smile that is natural-looking, color-matched and flawless. At the next dental visit, the Rocky River, OH dentist bonds the veneers to the teeth using a special adhesive and also adjusts them for fit and bite. He can also change the color of the veneers by varying the shade of the bonding cement.
Ceramic laminates are very durable. When they are cared for with good oral hygiene and regular dental exams and cleanings, veneers last for several years. However, patients should not eat extra-hard foods such as peanut brittle and ice cubes, nor should they open bottles or packaging with their teeth as these actions damage veneers and untreated tooth enamel, too!
Lastly, porcelain veneers may be used with othercosmeticdentalservices such as teeth whitening, cosmetic bonding, gum lifts and other treatments in a complete smile makeover. Laminates are just one of many tools Dr. Eick and his staff expertly deliver to give you a healthier and more beautiful smile than you ever thought possible.
